The End of the Affair (1955)

Van Johnson and Deborah Kerr play two sad people who want to be atheists and lovers. They are lovers for a while, but God, or World War 2, interferes. I'm glad this adapted screenplay was written by a woman, who manages to not judge the main character for wanting to have a sexually fulfilled life. Warning: this is a very sad story based on an extremely sad novel by Graham Greene.
